Welcome to Rye High School!

Rye High School is a comprehensive, public school serving the Rye community. Currently there are approximately 988 students enrolled for the 2015-2016 school year. Rye High School takes great pride in the wide variety of course offerings made available to students depending on their individual interests and needs.

One of the hallmarks of the High School is the extraordinary student-faculty relationships. Annually, we survey seniors as they are preparing to graduate and then again during their first year out of high school. As students reflect on their time in high school, they consistently rank their relationships with their teachers among their most valued high school experiences. The support and encouragement provided by faculty members is represented in many of our students’ accomplishments.

Another area in which students report back to us after they have enrolled in college is how well they have been prepared during high school for their future. Ninety-eight percent of our students go off to some form of post-secondary education. Rye High School encourages students to accept as many academic challenges as they desire. To that end, students are welcome in the rigorous Advanced Placement program. Twenty-two Advanced Placement courses are offered. This past May, 554 students sat for 1083 Advanced Placement exams. We are proud that 80% of our students earned a three or better on the Advanced Placement exam, well above the national standard as reported by College Board. The accomplishments highlight the supportive and positive relationships found in the classroom experience. Rye High School is especially proud to be listed by both Newsweek and the Washington Post as one of the top high schools in the country.

Our students are equally as busy outside of the classroom. Numerous extracurricular activities are offered each year with a tradition of encouraging students to design new clubs based on individual interests. The annual Activities Fair each September provides students with the opportunity to join different organizations or to create their own. Students initiate many service projects to aid the community at large and will assist other students as they prepare for the sixty hour community service graduation requirement. Each year at graduation we discover that students collectively have given back an average of 176 hours or more to various agencies and programs.

The Arts programs at Rye High School are continuing to expand. Student art work is presented throughout the high school. Interest in digital photography has lead students to pursue a photography concentration for the AP Studio Art exam. Students organize, review, and showcase many different talents within the school-wide Awards Assemblies held three times per year. The Parsons Street Players performed Anything Goes as well as two additional theatrical productions this past year. Concerts, art shows, and coffee houses round out the many venues for Rye High School students to pursue individual and group interests.

STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) has been an exciting addition to the High School. Engineering courses through Project Lead the Way have been popular requests.  Robotics, 3D Design and Architecture, and  AP Statistics  are other new courses designed to meet the increasing interests of our students.

In addition, Rye High School has a long-standing reputation of success in our interscholastic sports programs. Over 75% of our students participate in some form of athletic competition. The majority of our athletic teams have also earned the NYS Athletic Association Scholar Athlete Team School of Distinction recognition. In recent years the Girls Soccer and Field Hockey teams, and the Football team have been recognized as NY State Champions. For a more complete listing of opportunities check out the Athletics Department section of the website.

Rye places a remarkable emphasis on writing across the curriculum. The Writing Mentor program pairs students and faculty members as they meet regularly to discuss and prepare for major writing projects. Students are assigned to writing mentors in grades 9-11 and often continue working with their mentors through senior year because of the close, supportive relationships they develop.

I am pleased to have this opportunity to introduce you to some of the highlights of Rye High School. I encourage you to visit individual teacher pages to assist you in formulating a better understanding of the many goals and projects that Rye High School supports. If you have any additional questions or comments, please don't hesitate to contact me.

Sincerely,
Patricia B. Taylor, Principal
